Aisha Buhari Speaks on Her US Visit and Why She Sued Fayose

The wife of the president, Mrs Aisha Buhari, has spoken on her United States visit.

In an interview with the Hausa service of the Voice of America, Mrs Aisha Buhari said she is on a week-long visit to hold meetings with aid organisations on how to help women and children facing starvation in northeastern Nigeria.

According to Premium Times, she said, “Our children in the various camps are in dire situation and the government alone cannot do it, we have to get help.”

Mrs Aisha Buhari added that she has met with organisations promoting peace and provisions of aids to displaced children. She also met with the US Institute of Peace officials on Friday and assured that any aid disbursed for the project would be used accordingly, plus what is needed isn’t cash but help for the children aged between five months and seven who are dying of hunger-related diseases.

Premium Times adds that she noted that the United Nations International Children Fund (UNICEF) aid supplements are made with nuts that are produced in large quantities by Nigerian farmers. There is therefore a need to set up a plant in Nigeria.

She said:

“It often takes between 6-8 weeks for these things to be shipped to Nigeria, before they arrive, many children would have died, so I suggested to them to set up the manufacturing plant in the country if they really want to help us.”

On Ayo Fayose, Mrs Buhari said she slammed the Ekiti State Governor with a lawsuit because of his incessant attacks and false allegations which started during the 2015 campaign.

“At the time, he was not the only one insulting us, but people felt that it was just campaign,” she said, adding, “After the election, which we won and they lost, everyone else moved on except him and he extended his insults to me.”

Recall that the Ekiti State Governor had accused her of being indicted in the William Jefferson bribery scandal and did not retract his statements even after investigations revealed it wasn’t the President’s wife who was named in the famous scandal.

“I did not run for president. I am a married woman and I have never called his name. I never knew him. But as governor and chief executive, he kept insulting and raising false allegations against me, I have to respond and I decided to go to court,” she continued.

“He made allegations over what he said I did here in the US, even though I have never met the people he mentioned,” she said.
