EAGLES COACH ROHR TARGETS VICTORY OVER ZAMBIA
Ahead of Sunday’s World Cup qualification opener against Zambia, Super Eagles coach Gernot Rohr has backed his lads to deliver the three points in Ndola.
The 63-year-old coach told newsmen in Abuja Friday that the Eagles would begin their campaign with an outright victory as clinching the sole qualification ticket in the group wasn’t optional.
He expressed delight at the depth of talents in the squad, stating that not even the condition of the pitch in Ndola would prevent his side from emerging victorious, Vanguard writes.
“We have six new players and three will perhaps start the game,” Rohr said.
“You know that a player like Iwobi was injured last time but we all know that he is a good player and I hope his integration in the team will produce result in Ndola. The training has been good and we try to help and bring him into the team; he knows how we played in Uyo and we cannot change tactically because the time is short. We have other strategies but similar with what we did in Uyo, and I count on Iwobi to help us win the game in Ndola.
“We must avoid the mistake in Uyo where we had 27 shots on goal but converted only one and this means that we must have a good attack and players who can score.”
The German coach stated that he was not underrating his opponents as the technical crew had watched the video clips of Zambia’s last five games to ensure there were no loose ends.
“We know that they are very strong in attack and we have worked on the best tactics to win them but what is undisputable is that they are also a strong side,” he said.
“They are motivated like Nigeria but I think that we are hungrier than them.”
The Eagles depart Abuja Saturday for the game scheduled 2:30 pm local time Sunday.
